Firm Overview

Rockwood is a private investment firm with offices in Cleveland, New York and Denver. The firm makes buyout investments in lower middle-market companies with revenues between $10 and $75 million in regulated industrial sectors, including but not limited to aerospace & defense, energy (oil & gas, water/wastewater) and healthcare. Rockwood typically takes a control position in conjunction with each investment and focuses principally on complex entrepreneur-owned and corporate carve-out transactions. The firm has been investing with the same strategy since 1999 and is in the process of raising its fourth fund.


Position Description

Rockwood is a lean organization, so the Intern will receive unparalleled exposure to being part of building a private equity group. Given the wide variety of activities we are undertaking, this person will get exposure to an unusually broad range of investing activities. Importantly, the Intern will be an integral part of the team. The Intern will be expected to commit to the following activities, which may vary significantly from week to week: fundraising support and assistance, transaction evaluation and execution, and business development support. Based on the needs of the firm and performance of the intern, he or she may be offered a full-time position following graduation.


Fundraising Support and Assistance

  • Assist in preparation of fundraising materials, including investor memos, due diligence questionnaires, and related presentations
  • Manage investor information and document requests with support from other investment professionals
  • Compile workbooks and supporting documents into data room
  • Various other projects on an as-needed basis

Transaction Evaluation and Execution

  • Evaluation of new investment opportunities including transaction screening and analysis
  • Financial, market, competitor, and industry analysis
  • Interaction with lenders, bankers, attorneys and other external service providers
  • Development and preparation of bid packages and investment committee materials

Business Development

  • Work with partner of business development to facilitate new and existing relationships
  • Identify and research prospective business development leads or activities (conferences, trade shows, deal forums, etc.)
  • Various other projects on an as-needed basis


Qualifications & Characteristics

Rockwood continues to build a team of A-players, and is looking for a smart, aggressive and personable individual who immediately will contribute as a member of the team. Rockwood is a lean organization, so the Intern must be largely a self-starter and be comfortable rolling up his/her sleeves in an entrepreneurial and fast-paced environment. The Intern must have the maturity, professionalism and entrepreneurial skills to work closely and effectively with our internal team, particularly the Denver based investment professionals whom this position supports extensively, while also working with Rockwood professionals in our Cleveland and New York offices office, senior management teams and outside professionals. Only candidates with the following characteristics are encouraged to apply:

  • Record of academic achievement in his/her undergraduate environment
  • Relevant professional experience and coursework (an internship at an investment bank or private equity firm, private equity or financial modeling coursework, etc.) is an advantage but not a requirement
  • A strong work ethic, world class organizational skills and a history of follow-through
  • Outstanding relationship-building skills
  • Incoming Senior or recent graduate
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A “can do” attitude willing to take on any task that comes his/her way
  • Ties to Denver are preferred, but not required
